The Twenties

Well today I realized I turn 27 next week. It really came up fast. I know it sounds kinda stupid but 27 seems old to me all of a sudden. I've never consciously worked out how I'd divide up my twenties. I always said early twenties until 25. At that point I figured I better start saying "mid-twenties." But by that reasoning I knew I'd have to say late twenties at 26 and I didn't want to do that so I expanded the mid-twenties to include one year on either side and that made mid twenties 24 through 26. So, now that I'm about ready to jump that 26 hurdle and enter my late twenties I've decided to propose a more accurate dissection of the decade.

So we've got 10 years of the 20s. Since we're talking "early" "mid" and "late" that means we're dividing the 20s into three parts... so 3.33 (forever)--let's just say 3 and 1/3. Anyway, that means every 3 years and 4 months you graduate to the next phase of twentiness. At 20 (obviously) you start. At 23 years and 4 months you're in your mid twenties. This lasts until 26 years and 8 months when you hit your late 20s. From then on it's the twilight of your twenties all the way until the big 30. So I guess I hit my late twenties a few months ago and never even knew it. I guess my mind is slipping with age.

I think the only way I can stay in my mid twenties is to cut the decade up into 5 groups of two years. I could have early twenties (20 and 21) early mid (22 and 23) mid (24 and 25) late mid (26 and 27) and finally late twenties (28 and 29). If I do that I'm still in the 6 year period of mid twenties (subset late mid). Maybe I'll go with that.

Anyway, I hope this helps. If you can't find any consolation in how I've categorized the 20s you can always calculate your age in a different base.

In base 12 I'm only 23, in base 11 I'm 25...

***but in base 9 I'm turning 30.

Oh, and everyone who is turning 27...shortly after your 27th birthday you'll approach your 10,000 days old mark. This is a landmark that only happens once. 10 days isn't a big deal because people are too distracted by your being alive. 100 days has the same problem. At 1,000 days you're too young to appreciate your place in our base 10 numbering system...but at 10,000 days...at that day you're prepared to properly celebrate your big day... (and just a side note, if you make it to 100,000 then you're 273 years old and you should be celebrating something else...like the fountain of youth you discovered or stem cell research).

Alright, I'm done for the day. I'll get back to the theodicy conversation later. I just haven't felt like writing anything too complex lately. Hope everyone is doing well.

Oh. So I hit my "mid twenties" (according to you're 3 1/3 rule) last month.

Didn't even notice.
